c) SOUTH AFRICA - Clarens Cold Water Classic
13-14 July 2002 on the Ash River in the Eastern Free State. Clarens is the host town and it already has a great tourism infrastructure. This event is aimed towards both the everyday Joe Soap and the professional paddlers. There will be various categories ranging from novice to expert. The aim of this event is to attract more people to this great and growing sport. This gives people the perfect opportunity, as there will be rafts for hire and guides throughout the course therefore making it a safe learning ground. There is some spice added to our event because, for once, the women will receive the big prizes. There will also be various entertainments for the spectators such as live bands on Saturday night and a sheep on the spit on Sunday at the prize giving (which will be included in the entry fee).

The Ash river is a very fast flowing, high-volume, narrow and challenging river. There are many obstacles along the way and intense concentration is necessary. The proposed course is 2 km in length and the rapids range from grade 3 to grade 4. The race is based on time from start to finish. Competitors will wear bibs for timing purposes.

Rafting, crocking & kayaking event for women, mixed and men’s teams. Emphasis will be on women, as they will receive the main prizes.

Rafting and kayaking clinics can be arranged for complete novices and there will be raft masters for hire.

The Heats will be held on Saturday including all the teams in all the categories. The teams with the best Times in the various categories will go forward to the finals, which will be held throughout Sunday. There will also be a Rafting rodeo so the teams that didn’t go through to the finals can still take part. The Prize giving will follow on Sunday after all the events have been completed.

Entertainment: On Saturday there will be an assortment of bands, bring in braai and a great party will be instore for all. On Sunday there will be a spit braai and potjie for all after prize giving this is included in the entry fee.

There is also a great spectator point at the end of the course where the thrills and spills will be seen by all on the most exciting rapid.

Equipment will be on hire for the participants without their own equipment. The equipment will be hired out from Four Rivers Rafting (operator on the Tugela river) and Ash River Adventures (The host of this great event and an operator on the Ash river). They will also provide a transport shuttle service to take participants from finish to start.

There also will be raft masters for hire for the totally inexperienced paddlers Contact Jackie or Matt on 083 672 4813
